These fruits resemble seeds like cumin, cumin and fennel.
They have a bitter and strong flavor similar to anise and oregano but smell almost like thyme because they contain thymol.
They certainly have a less delicate taste, as well as somewhat bitter, spicy.

Before grinding they are usually roasted as this treatment allows the spice to develop a more delicate and complex aroma.
