The name Melekuni has its roots in Ancient Greece. It consists of 2 synthetic honeys and kuni from honey and kuni (kouna-es) as we call the seeds in Rhodes. It comes from kokkon (kokkonos) which in the Ancient Greek language means seed. Honey and sesame had a very important place in the diet of the ancient Greeks.

2018: Melekuni is recognized as a Product of Geographical Indication of Rhodes and bears the PGI label.
