Description
Organically grown ditsy in a 50 gram package.
Origanum dictamnus, known in Greek as Dictamus, with various names depending on the region such as adichtamos, atitamos, diktamno, dittamo, ditamo, erondas, libanochorto, mallariachorto, stathori, stamnochorto, stomatochorto, stomachochorto, stamatochorto, is a tender perennial plant that grows 20-30 cm.
It is endemic to Crete and grows wild on rocky mountain slopes, cliffs and gorges. The name comes from Mount Dikti (Lasithi Mountains) where it used to be abundant. This small, fluffy shrub is easily recognized by its characteristic soft, velvety texture. Tiny pink flowers surrounded by brighter purple-pink bracts add an exuberant touch of color to the plant in summer and autumn. Its leaves are fluffy, small, plump, gray-green. It is a healing, therapeutic, antioxidant, antimicrobial, soothing, and very digestive aromatic plant. It also acts as an antidiabetic, emmenagogue and as an aphrodisiac.
Dittany has a spicy and slightly bitter flavor with an intense and pungent aroma of Mediterranean oregano that dominates and characterizes the profile of this unique aromatic plant.
It is cultivated in specific areas of Crete where the microclimate and soil quality allow it to thrive.
This limited production is harvested during flowering from May to September and dried naturally.
As a condiment, it goes well with seafood "dishes", fresh salads and soft cheeses.
